Director's Statement

I've always been interested in experimental film and storytelling, and I wanted to try to replicate the experience of dreaming and slowly realizing you're dreaming in a short film. Alice in Wonderland and the Wizard of Oz were deeply beloved classics to me growing up, and I was particularly thinking of Jan Svenkmajer's 1988 retelling Alice during filming. But I wanted to tell a New York story, one grounded in my own modern queer perspective. In preparation for filming, the actors and I did a lot of improvisation to try to make the performances as lived in as possible, and a lot of lines they tried on the spot made it into the final film. My hope is the audience, like waking up from an interesting dream, will walk out of the film analyzing what they've seen and heard and trying to guess what it all means.
